Doctor Who and Uniqueness

So, the rumors of two Tens have been flying around and that reminded me of a conversation that I had with someone a while back regarding the "uniqueness" of the Doctor. It seems that there are alt-universe!Jackie and alt-universe!Pete, and I remember wondering outloud whether or not there would be an alt-universe!Doctor. Someone else (augh, I don't remember and I can't seem to find it in any of my old emails) responded that the Doctor and the other Time Lords are unique across all the universes and dimensions. In essence, that there is only one Doctor, one Master, one Romana, etc.

Is this true? Where can I find this little nugget of information? (Although I worry that it's a piece of canon that I have forgotten or completely missed.)

I feel like such a bad fan.

ETA: Oh I found this discussion which poses the whole alt!Doctor question. It's a recent discussion, so it's not the one that I had sometime last year (or maybe even the year before, my memory is hazy (time is an illusion, lunchtime doubly so)).

I have it in my head that RTD said that there was not an alt-universe!Doctor or other alt!Time Lords, but I can't source it. Just something I vaguely remember reading somewhere ... In short, I'm no help, sorry. :)

(But if there is an alt!Doctor, my unfinished multichapter fic is Jossed worse than it is already. *tragic sigh*)

I haven't been following the rumors at all, and my Who knowledge mainly covers the Tom Baker era and the new series... but could they be talking about one of the "alt" Doctors like the Valeyard, or whatever that weird Michelin Man was who followed Tom Baker around before he died?

The Valeyard isn't the same guy as the Watcher. The Watcher is more of a keeper of the Doctor's soul or something, merging with him just before he's about to regenerate (which was the case with both Three to Four and Four to Five). A future projection, but not a full, distinct separate personality with a life of its own like the Valeyard. The Watcher's more about Barry Letts's Buddhist geekery than an alt!Doctor per se.

It would be a bit weird, given that the Doctor has access to one single universe. If there were only one Doctor for all the universes, I would assume he'd be able to flit between them naturally.

I really doubt an alt-universe Doctor would look like Ten, though. He may still be Nine. Or Tom Baker. Or some other face entirely (preferably with a goatee and its concordant evil personality).

Tom Baker said something about wishing he could've played the Master, and I don't think he was entirely kidding. (Although it can be hard to tell with him!) If he has any interest in being on the new show, they should snap him up NOW! Ideally I'd like to see him return as the Fourth Doctor somehow, but barring that, there are all sorts of other possibilities. If he even did a cameo, there would be a mass geekgasm across all space and time...

I don't know of any canon information establishing that Time Lords are unique. And some of the spinoff stuff had an alt-Doctor or an alt-Master. It may be fanon.

From my general understanding, Gallifrey remained outside of time, and was as such unique to all universes. I can't quite recall where I got that from, but it's probably floating around the internet somewhere.

From flist folks that pointed to the information coming from Doctor's Trainers. It was posted also on who_anon.

I'm thinking of the Valeyard here... so it wouldn't be a new thing. He was an evil alt!Doctor from a time crack between regenerations towards the end of the Doctor's life, so maybe.

Also, man. A non-evil alt!Master would break the Doctor's hearts so prettily.

Did you ever read The Face of the Enemy, one of the PDAs? It had a non-evil alt-Master who'd been captured and tortured by the alt-Earth in Inferno.

Yup. Read that one.

ETA: Meant to say that it wasn't that special, even if Dave M is from the fairly-decent end when it comes to the NA/MA authors.
